Premier’s main long-term customer is Verve Energy, Western Australia’s major generator of electricity. The Company’s coal is also supplied to Worsley Alumina, Iluka Resources, Tiwest, Bemax Cable Sands and a number of nurseries.
Premier Coal has always had one major customer, the State’s electricity commission, now just the generation section called Verve Energy, which owns a substantial part of electricity generation capacity in WA. Our coal is used to power the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) supplying the south-west corner of the State and as far away as Kalbarri and Kalgoorlie.
Premier Coal is the sole supplier of the Collie A power station (1-1.2 million tonnes per year) and also supplies 2.5 million tonnes to Muja Power Station. Both of these are serviced by a conveyor from the mine site. Coal is also delivered by rail to Kwinana Power Station.
BHPBilliton Worsley Alumina refinery near Collie uses coal for steam production used in the alumina process.
Iluka Resources has a major minerals sands mining and processing operation near Capel on the south-west coast and near Geraldton on the mid west coast of WA. Premier Coal has a contract to supply Iluka nut coal (16-75mm) as a reductant for the production of synthetic rutile from ilmenite.
Tiwest also uses Premier Coal as a reductant for synthetic rutile from ilmenite.
Bemax Cable Sands uses approximately 7,000 tonnes per year as a heat source for drying concentrates.
Other minor uses of Premier’s coal are nurseries and steam trains eg at Whiteman’s Park, which is supplied free as a community service.
