Aquaculture Project

The Ngalang Boodja Mine Lake Aquaculture Project.

Local innovation and international vision has seen Premier Coal take a leadership role in the establishment of the Ngalang Boodja Mine Lake Aquaculture Project – a research aquafarm that implements leading technologies for the sustainable rehabilitation and future commercial use of mine voids.

This ground-breaking environmental initiative has linked large-scale mine rehabilitation with Aboriginal education / training to create a feasible, sustainable and vibrant new centre for marron farming in Collie, Western Australia.

Premier Coal has taken a lead partnership role in this project and is proud of the result. The conversion of a former mining facility into a community asset is providing opportunity and direction to the township of Collie, and ownership and environmental reward to those workers involved in its continued growth and success.

The Project has successfully developed techniques in water treatment, while increasing WA’s marron production and providing the additional benefits of education in aquaculture.

The Project has the potential to create a freshwater industry development hub which will play a critical role in the growth and profitability of the industry in WA. It also showcases how aquaculture can integrate within WA’s mining operations to deliver tangible benefits to the local community and WA.
